Claps & Slaps

by The Lantern on 30/04/09 at 3:56 pm

  • A clap to the recent amazing spring weather
  • A slap to those of you who think it is funny to throw water balloons at complete strangers from your dorm room window
  • A clap to everyone for listening in HPE  when your teacher says go outside to play
  • A slap to those who cannot catch a football
  • A slap to technology people that don’t actually know how to do their job
  • A clap to everyone laying out in the sun around campus to get a head start on this summer’s tan
  • A slap to cell phones that never have service
  • A slap to the Swine Flu panic: the regular flu kills many more people every  year

A SLAP to the Lantern for having an awful issue!!!

There is no reason to have FOUR articles about UCONN’s Spring Weekend! In case you didn’t realize we are Eastern and this upcoming weekend is our Spring Weekend. You could have done a story on that how this year they are having rides at the Carnival, laser tag in the gym, bingo with awesome prizes or an almost already sold out concert. But instead you talk about people getting drunk and peeing outside. That is disgraceful to the paper and to the people writing the stories. You may have thought your story was clever now but what happens when you go to a job interview and they pull up the story about you not being responsible enough to maintain your duties as DD or your inability to tell the difference between a tree and a person.

Another big SLAP for covering the Elections. SGA gave you the exclusive on the election results and your story was crap. (Not to mention the awful editing job) The winner was not announced until the 2nd paragraph, what is that? When Obama won you didn’t see them dancing around the news. And you couldn’t even get a picture just stretch out the logo.

Another SLAP to the article about Dan McCue dropping out of the race. The paper is for the Campus community not for Dan to lay out his personal problems. Did you know that another candidate dropped out the of the race. Didn’t chose to cover that story now did you? In regards to the section of Dan’s personal story about CAB and their increase…the increase was for concert expenses!!! You can’t expect CAB to improve their already semester-in-advanced-planned events just because SGA agreed to increase their funding a month into the semester.

Three SLAPS and your out!!! Lantern clean up your act or you will have no readers and will continue to ruin your reputation.

    Slapper:

As a Lantern alum, I agree that there could have been more thought in this issue, but your criticism is a little harsh. The UCONN spring weekend story was not a bad leading story, but I agree that four stories on it is a bit over the top. My criticism of the UCONN lead story is that it is written in the first person. The appropriate angle on the story would have been how UCONN prepared for spring weekend and how its preparations impacted the events. There should have been quotes from theUCONN Dept. of Public Safety and some summary of past troubles there. The story is almost devoid of quotes, but the writer certainly has a talent to write descriptively.

As to the SGA elections, the SGA had no choice but to give the Lantern an exclusive because the Lantern is the only one that would cover that story. They could have used sub-headlines or other alternatives to quickly convey the main winners. I agree also that there should be more original photography and far more quotes and a lot less articles written in the first person. The Lantern should ban the word “I” from the paper. Moreover, there should be a requirement of actually interviewing people for news articles and using quotes.

The Lantern has a rich history and sometimes it takes a while for the paper to find its voice. The Lantern allows anyone to write without any special background. Sometimes, it takes a while to get acclimated to newspaper writing. Open up the Facebook page for wall comments and you will surely get valuable advice from the 20 odd former Lantern members on there as friends.

    Clarification as a Student,

The quote that was stated in the “Student Drops out of SGA Election” stating about CAB has been falsely interpreted.

I did not state that CAB was not doing their job, but simply stating that if the continuation of the student body overall is still complaining about nothing to do on the weekend, and CAB is left in charge of weekend events, then it is something SGA can look into.

This referral was to comment on the other candidates platform stating that they want to bring more events on the weekends. The aim of the quote was to state that SGA should NOT be focusing on weekend events, but improving life on Campus and leaving the event planning to CAB. No way was I saying that CAB was doing a terrible job, but if the student’s outcry of nothing to do continues, that SGA would be more happy to investigate and resolve with communication with their organization.

And I’m glad you feel strongly about how wrong it was to even published the article in the first place, claiming i was using the paper as a platform for personal gain, but that is not the case. A story was there to follow and the staff writer chose to write it.

If you would like to see how our operation is done, or think.. or FEEL that you can make us do better, then jump on board and show us the way.

    We meet 3PM every Wednesday/

    Thank you,

    AWESOME job Slapper!

Haha, humorous how The Lantern covered their SGA elections like it was force fed to them. The Lantern has just become a PR rag for the school.

    ——on a different note——

Hey Dan, I got your message. I’d love to help out with the paper, but I graduated in December, and prior to that I was an RA and also held an internship at the CSU system office. If you want a great experience writing PR I can totally help you out with a reference.
