Ladybugs: They’re EVERYWHERE!

The “ladybug infestation” has swarmed into towns all over Connecticut, as well as in surrounding states, and Willimantic has been no exception. Eastern students may have noticed the little bugs all over campus recently; they are literally everywhere! Just look out a window on the top floor of Constitution Hall and you can see ladybugs crawling on windowsills all the way down the building. Take a walk across campus and you’re bound to see them making their way to their next destination. One even recently wound up on the ceiling of the Campus Lantern’s meeting room in the Student Center. Not only have these ladybugs been making appearances on campus, but in curious students’ Facebook statuses across New England as well. These ladybugs came seemingly out of nowhere and have caused quite the stir among students who may have never witnessed such a phenomenon before. So, why are they here?
Ladybugs hibernate in large quantities when the weather turns cooler. They are known to go in search of a warm, comfortable place to stay during the cold months. It is not uncommon for people to discover ladybugs surrounding their homes or even inside thanks to cracks and crevasses in windows and doors. Typically ladybugs are drawn to establish temporary residencies in light colored buildings, which are ample here at Eastern Connecticut State University, which can help explain why they have been spotted here recently.
Already, Connecticut has experienced some very cold weather, even snow flurries, and it is only October. As the temperature slowly began to increase again, the ladybug sightings started. Insect experts have pointed out that ladybugs tend to swarm in their heaviest numbers during warmer weather after a period of cooler weather. Thus, with the irregular weather patterns as of late and the relatively light-colored buildings on campus, it is no wonder why so many ladybugs have been seen all over Eastern.
