Halloween is almost here and a lot of people like to get in the scaring kind of mood. Instead of going to see the overhyped Paranormal Activity or the redundant Saw VI films, go visit a haunted house or take a drive down a creepy road. Whether someone prefers a spooky graveyard with a legend or some annual Halloween event, the following list of attractions is sure to send shivers down the spine of any spooky adventurer.
Dark Manor Haunted House in Norwich: A “professional” haunted house full of actors, classic horror scenes, and interesting props. Small groups are lead indoors and outdoors by a guide in which they will encounter artistic rooms, creepy music, narrow passages, creatures lunging towards them, and of course, a man with a chainsaw. Price: 16 dollars.
Lantern Tour and Haunted Woods Walk: Located in Coventry, this outdoor tour is presented by the Coventry Historical Society and all proceeds benefit it. The tour begins when the group is lead back in time to a tavern where they enjoy entertainment and snacks. They are then told a legendary ghost tale before they are lead out into the haunted woods to explore its inhabitants. Price: 15 dollars
Old Saybrook Haunted Hayride: Put on by the local fire department, a tractor drawn hayride leads groups into the woods for a loud, dark and scary adventure. This attraction promises to give those who wait in line a ride no matter how late and allows them to get a dollar off the admission price if they bring an unexpired food item. This attraction lasts an hour and includes a path walk as well as a hayride. Price: 10 dollars.
Trail of Terror: This haunted trail can be found in Wallingford and offers a self lead outdoor tour. The wait may be long but that only means it is well worth it. This trail offers an interactive tour online in which you can learn about the legend before you go. Price: 10 dollars.
Spooky Kingdom: This attraction is located in Plantsville and while it is a rather newer attraction, it still promises to satisfy. Spooky Kingdom focuses on animation and motion sensors which offer something a little different than the array of other surrounding attractions. All donations go the Alzheimer Association. Price: Free.
Not everything scary has to be make-believe; here are five places in Connecticut that are legendarily haunted no matter the date. Be warned, some of these places are monitored by local police and visiting can be considered trespassing.
Old Trinity Church: This Georgian style church was built in 1771, so if its old age and hundreds of years of desertion are not enough, in 1987 a serial killer named Michael Ross was rumored to have killed, raped and buried at least one of his victims in the cross shaped clearing in the woods behind the church. It has been reported that there have been sightings of ghostly shapes in the windows and strange noises in the woods.
Barahack Settlement in Pomfret: Appearing like nothing more than a mess of stones, rumor has it that if you visit the settlement and graveyard between the hours of midnight and two, you will see ghosts of old settlers working and babies crying. Some even say you can see babies sitting in trees. One must be careful though, it is a very tricky spot to find, especially in the dark.
Sleeping Giant in Hamden: This mountain is already interesting enough because it literally resembles a “sleeping giant”. Still, some visitors say that at the top of the mountain a normal looking man dressed all in black can be spotted, yet when one gets closer they notice a white ring on his left arm. If one gets too close, legend has it that the man will evaporate into thin air. Sadly, anyone who sees this figure once, never sees him again despite conscious efforts.
Hell’s Hollow and Maude’s Grave: Both places can be found in Voluntown and while Hell’s Hollow can be a creepy experience it too is hard to find since there is no street signs directing one toward it. It is rumored that while driving down this windy and uneven road, a solider runs beside the car at the same speed. Also, when driving down the road toward Sterling, when the car passes the area near Maude’s grave (ten feet off the road) her name has been reportedly heard uttered by a mysterious voice and then the car stalls or crashes.
Camp Connecticut: Not a lot of legend found to be behind the ghost-like apparitions that witnesses have seen by the gates, but more than 40 have reportedly been sighted. Also many photographs taken near the large camp sign have been developed with orbs in them. It is said that they have proven not to be a problem with the development.
